The fairytales were never safe. A tabletop RPG where ordinary Heroes walk into enchanted woods and discover the world has plans for them. Fiction-first fairytale fantasy. Whimsydark. 3–5 players.
What Is Fabled Empire?
Fabled Empire is a cooperative tabletop role-playing game set in Aetheria, a kingdom where fairy tales are real and dangerous. Talking beasts carry grudges. Fairies never lie, but their truths are weapons. The dead do not stay quiet. The only thing between a village and ruin is your Fellowship.
You play Heroes: ordinary people who stepped off the road and into a story.
The Tone: Whimsydark
The mood swings between cozy and creepy. One moment you share barley soup by a warm hearth. The next, a fairy creditor arrives at the feast and politely requests your firstborn.
Beautiful gifts come with hidden hooks. The rot hides beneath the glamour. Heroes treat their bizarre situations with deadly seriousness.
The Princess Bride meets the Brothers Grimm. Over the Garden Wall meets The Dark Crystal. The Legend of Zelda if every character remembered what you did to them.
The Land of Aetheria
Enchanted forests press against market squares. Rivers swallow princes. The fairy courts hold older grudges than any mortal war.
Enchantment Is Real, and It Costs
Enchantments are not make-believe. Witches trade favors over cauldron fires. Less spectacle, more slow revelation: the enchantment sizzles in the background, and the bill always comes due. Wondrous relics and artifacts exist, rare and powerful, but every enchantment carries a price.
Wildlife With Opinions
Animals can speak, though not all choose to. A bipedal frog in a waistcoat is as ordinary as its four-legged counterpart in a pond. Some creatures are helpful. Some are mischievous. Some are ancient, powerful, and holding a grudge you inherited from your grandmother.
Courts, Crowns, and Gossip
The kingdoms of Aetheria do not wage wars over borders. That does not mean the powerful are idle. Monarchs range from hospitable and warm to reclusive and dangerous. Intrigue, gossip, and power struggles fill every court. Your Heroes will find themselves tangled in all of it.
What Lurks Beneath
Beyond the woods lies the underworld: a dangerous maze of caves filled with dark spirits and older things. These beings trap visitors, bargain for release, or simply wait in the dark for someone foolish enough to descend.
What Makes It Different
Fairy-Tale Logic
Kindness is rewarded. Cruelty compounds. Debts must be paid. Challenges come in threes. Names hold power. A fox you fed today guards your path tomorrow. A goblin you cheated grinds that grudge forever.
Fiction-First Mechanics
How you act matters as much as what you do. Smash a door boldly and the noise alerts the guards. Pick the lock slyly and you break the mechanism. The dice are transparent: you know the stakes before you roll. No hidden difficulty numbers, no post-roll negotiation. You make your choice with full knowledge of what is at risk.
Every Foe Is a Puzzle
Fairy-tale monsters carry hidden weaknesses. Discover them through lore before the fight, observation during the fight, or creative play through the fiction. A troll might fear the sound of iron bells. A shadow beast might dissolve in its own reflection. Combat rewards curiosity and cleverness, not just sharp steel.
The Duel of Words
Not every battle is fought with swords. Parley is a structured social encounter with a ticking fuse: a Patience Trail that shrinks as you argue, emotional Heartstrings to exploit, and Pitfalls that turn a careless word into a disaster. Negotiate with a fairy queen, outwit a trickster, or talk a grieving ghost out of its rage.
Mechanical Inspirations
Mechanically, Fabled Empire is a medium-weight system that feels like a blend of Daggerheart, Dragonbane, and Land of Eem. If you have played any of those, you will find familiar rhythms here. But we think we have built something that stands on its own.
Play a Hero
Build your Hero from a fairy-tale Archetype. The playtest includes six of the twelve Archetypes that will ship with the full game:
- The Curious — Poke locks, taste strange berries, turn every mistake into a story worth telling.
- The Enchanted — Wield volatile magic you barely understand. It listens to you. Sometimes.
- The Gallant — Chase rumors of a missing loved one across the kingdom. You will not stop.
- The Sequestered — Raised behind walls. The doors are open now. Everything is terrifying and wonderful.
- The Starcatcher — A thief with a bounty and a talent for not getting caught. So far.
- The Untamed — Human by day. Something else by moonlight. The beast within is patient.
Six more Archetypes arrive with the full release.
The Playtest
The public playtest is coming soon. Everything you need for your first session:
- Complete rules — dice, Scuffles, social encounters, enchantment, survival.
- Six fairy-tale Archetypes — build a Hero in 15 minutes.
- "The Whispering Ruins" — a full introductory adventure.
We want your feedback. Did the dice feel right? Were the rules clear? Did anything slow the game down? Tell us what worked and what did not.
The fairytales were never safe. Walk into the woods.
