A Thousand Miles from Anywhere
Fabled Empire™ is a cooperative role-playing adventure game. It is set within a fairytale fantasy setting, filled with esoteric enchantments, talking animal folk, and daring escapes.
Rich in flavor, light on lore. The lore of Fabled Empire is woven into the rules and some short blurbs on just a few pages. As you create your character and engage in play, you'll uncover it. You have the option to tailor the setting to your preference or immerse yourself fully in the pre-existing world.
Strange is stylish. Fairytales feature intriguing characters with unusual tendencies and ideas. Fabled Empire embraces this tradition, fostering creativity and imagination.
Lighthearted and whimsical. Jim Henson's collection of work embodies the type of whimsy Fabled Empire aims to encourage and promote. Not to be confused with constant silliness or absurdity, players should focus on laughter, fun, and joy especially during lighter parts of the gameplay.
The Land of Aetheria
Strange is stylish. Fairytales feature intriguing characters with unusual tendencies and ideas. Fabled Empire embraces this tradition, fostering creativity and imagination.
The Dark Whimsy. While inspired by the whimsical charm of Jim Henson's works, Fabled Empire veers into the uncanny and unsettling. Not to be confused with constant silliness or absurdity, players should focus on the eerie joy and haunting fun that arise in lighter parts of the gameplay.
Beneath the surface. Beyond the Woods lies the Underworld. It is a dangerous maze of caves filled with evil entities and dark spirits. These beings can aim to trap visitors or negotiate their release from these underground confines.
Wildlife embracing urban life. Animals can speak, though not all choose to. Walking on two or four legs might be seen as normal for both. For example, a bipedal frog in a waistcoat is as common as its four-legged counterpart in a pond.
Delve into the dark woods. The woods are cloaked in perpetual twilight. They are a labyrinth of gnarled trees with whispering leaves and tricky shadows. Mysterious creatures lurk in the dense underbrush, some malicious and others merely lost.
Confront wicked beasts. Creatures wreaking havoc on townsfolk is a familiar trope in fairytales, and this story is no exception. Aetheria is no stranger to a notorious beast lurking beyond the lake or what might be dwelling within it.
Why Play Fabled Empire?
Fabled Empire is a fairytale fantasy tabletop game. Like its cousins, it's played with a book, pencils, dice, and paper. You usually play it with good friends or new acquaintances around a table. It offers a structured form of make-believe and it has rules to navigate the challenges you'll face.
This game has some differences from its relatives. Its not a huge lore dump about how important its world is to the setting. Fabled Empire's mechanics are crafted to provide a unique take for fairytale stories. They differ from how tabletop roleplaying games have handled fairytale fantasy so far.
In this game, you'll create a character to navigate this world. One of Twelve fairytale archetypes will be inspiration for your character, and you'll send them on quests.
Why play Fabled Empire over the others? Well, here are three reasons:
- Excitement: At the start of the game, players embark on a journey of exploration. They face treacherous situations and navigate paths with challenges and narrow escapes. This creates moments of tension and exhilaration, testing the players' skills and decision-making. They uncover hidden secrets and face thrilling situations. Players create memorable experiences that will resonate with them well beyond the game.
- Shared Victories: This is a collaborative narrative game where players unite against formidable antagonists. You will harness your unique abilities and remarkable magical relics. Together, you will use them to defeat evil forces that plague the world. In doing so, you'll join your characters' fates, paving a path to create stories and achievements.
- Lightheartedness: Drama and conflict have their moments. But, the heart of this game is in the wacky characters and offbeat scenarios. Igniting laughter and excitement is a key focus. This playfulness fosters light-hearted escapism. It also focuses on crafting moments of humor. It's more about reveling in fun and the joy of escaping into this whimsical world than about seriousness.
What Type of Gamer Are You?
- Familiar with Dungeons & Dragons 5e: Fabled Empire offers familiar rules. They are sleek and modern for those seeking a fresh setting for their fantasy adventures. Combat (which we call Scuffles) are more dynamic, offering players a wider array of choices each turn.
- Old-school Gamers: Fabled Empire is designed to resemble a traditional system with a familiar feel. But, it adds modern conveniences. They make it easy to use and optimized for quickly getting back to your story.
- Gaming Parents: Fabled Empire is generally kid-friendly, though it does contain some mature themes. Fortunately, it's flexible. It allows the inclusion or exclusion of any themes, like violence. This can happen without harming player progression.
How to Play
Here's the simplified setup for the game:
- Determine which member of the group will take on the role of the Narrator.
- The rest of the players will make their Player Characters. They will start with a Playbook which is their fairytale archetype and then go through the Character Creation steps.
- Players will complete their characters by making Relationships with the other Player's characters.
- Discuss your game's tone together. It can range from dark to whimsical. Make other decisions to ensure you're all on the same adventure. It can also be good to discuss any topics or themes you don’t want to bring into the story.
- That's everything you need to begin playing!
This activity is very fun, and can complete it in about 30 minutes. When you're all first getting started, it might take an hour, but rarely any longer, getting you all to the story.
